Kati Kaia
Where art becomes part of the practice.
RECOGNISED
Independently assessed against The Exquisite Standard.

In a nutshell
Kati Kaia began with an unusual proposition: what if a yoga mat could be both a piece of functional equipment and a work of art?
Founded by artist, designer and yoga teacher Kati Ann Treble, each design begins as an original painting before being translated onto a high-performance yoga mat. Art, movement, material and function are considered together rather than sequentially.
The result is an object intended not simply to occupy the space in which practice happens, but to contribute to it.
What we love
- 01
The art
Every design begins as an original painting, sometimes developed over months, before being translated onto the finished mat.
- 02
The attention to practice
Grip, touch, visual placement and performance have been considered in relation to the body using the mat, not simply as product specifications.
- 03
The material choices
Natural tree rubber, recycled PET, water-based inks and heat-welded construction reflect an attempt to balance performance with environmental consideration.
Art you can practise on
The artwork is not decoration added once the functional object has been designed. It is where the product begins.
Kati's paintings emerge from experiences, emotion and the natural world. Komorebi, for example, developed from watching sunlight move through the trees outside her window.
The originals are captured at high resolution and translated onto the mats with attention to preserving their depth, movement and tonal character.
There is something lovely about the resulting contradiction: the original creative act is singular, but the finished object is made to be used repeatedly, stepped on, moved across and incorporated into everyday ritual.
The mat becomes a canvas for practice.
Made for the body
A yoga mat creates a small physical environment around the person using it.
Kati Kaia has considered grip, touch, movement, colour and material as parts of that environment. The performance surface is designed to increase grip as heat builds, while deliberately avoiding the kind of excessive grip that can encourage dependence on the mat rather than control through the body itself.
The natural-rubber base, recycled performance surface and non-toxic material choices form part of the same consideration.
It is an object designed to support a practice rather than become the focus of it.
Material matters
The base of each mat is made from natural tree rubber, while the performance layer uses recycled PET. Kati Kaia reports using water-based non-toxic inks and heat-welded construction rather than adhesive bonding.
The assessment also examined what happens around the product: manufacturing standards, factory oversight, quality control, packaging, durability and the relationship with suppliers.
Mats are designed for repeated use, are machine washable and undergo testing for grip, bonding and durability. The brand also supports conservation through Rainforest Trust and reports offsetting delivery-related carbon through its ecommerce programme.
No physical product is without consequence. What matters is whether those consequences have been considered beyond the most visible sustainability claims.
Here, there is evidence that they have.
What the assessment found
The independent assessment found a strong relationship between creative intention, material choice, product performance, manufacturing oversight, stewardship and human experience.
The artwork can be traced back to an original creative practice. Product performance is connected to deliberate decisions about grip, touch and the relationship between body and mat. Environmental considerations appear within material selection, construction, durability, packaging and manufacturing requirements.
Importantly, these are not isolated features.
Many of the same decisions support several outcomes at once. Material choices affect physical experience and environmental consequence. Durability supports quality while reducing the need for replacement. Artistic integrity contributes both to beauty and to the experience of practice. Manufacturing oversight helps preserve decisions made earlier in the process.
The assessment also found evidence of iterative product development, defined manufacturing requirements, material standards and quality-control processes.
It was the relationship between these elements, rather than any single feature or environmental credential, that supported Recognition.
Recognition
Kati Kaia is recognised by The Exquisite Standard for creating luxury that can genuinely be felt, where art, movement, craftsmanship and stewardship come together to enrich the human experience of everyday ritual and practice.
